What these statistics mean for a bidder

A single live count hides a lot. Government buying in India is spread across thousands of buyers on dozens of portals, and the mix changes through the year. These tables turn the count into something you can act on: which sectors have the most open work, which departments publish the most, and which states are busiest.

Sectors are our grouping of the work in the tender title and category, for example goods and supply, works and construction, or services and operation and maintenance. Goods and supply is usually the largest group because GeM carries a very large number of small purchase bids. Works and construction is smaller in count but often much larger in value per tender.

Departments show the buyers. Central buyers such as railways and defence units publish very large numbers of tenders, most of them for supplies. If you supply to those buyers, the count shows how much repeat work there is. If you build, the more useful departments for you may be public works departments and municipal bodies further down the list.

State rows depend on the state a tender is tagged to. Tenders from central buyers may not carry a clear state, so the states do not add up to the total, and a missing state is not an error. Use the state table to see where state portals and local buyers are most active, then filter the explorer by that state.

Counts are a guide to activity, not to opportunity. A tender only helps you if you meet its conditions and can price it. That is the purpose of the Go/No-Go verdict, which checks every eligibility clause against your own documents, and of the winners and competitors tab, which shows who won before and at what price. Use this page to decide where to look, and BidShakti to decide what to bid.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Where do these numbers come from?

They come from the BidShakti sweep of GeM, CPPP and 18 state e-procurement portals. Each tender is counted once, even if more than one portal lists it, and only tenders that are still open for bids are counted.

How often are the statistics updated?

The sweep runs every morning and this page is refreshed about every 30 minutes. The as-of line above the tables shows the time of the figures you are reading.

Why do some tenders have no state?

A few portals do not publish a clear state for central buyers such as railways or defence units. Those tenders are in the live total but may not appear in a state row, so the state counts can add up to less than the total.

Is a department with more tenders a better opportunity?

Not by itself. A large count means a buyer publishes a lot of tenders, but many may be for work you do not do or for conditions you cannot meet. Use the count to find where activity is, then check each tender with a Go/No-Go verdict.

Can I search the tenders behind these numbers?

Yes. The live explorer lets you search by keyword and state without an account. A free trial adds the verdict, competitors and bid pack.
