EMD calculator
Work out how much earnest money a tender will ask you to block, from the estimated contract value and the EMD percentage.
Estimate your EMD
Indicative only. The NIT states the exact EMD amount and who is exempt. MSME and startup bidders are often exempt, so check the tender.
What EMD means in Indian tendering
EMD stands for Earnest Money Deposit. It is an amount a bidder places with the buyer to show the bid is serious. If you win and then refuse to sign the contract, or you withdraw during the validity of your bid, the buyer can forfeit the EMD. If you lose, it is returned after the tender is finalised.
Most government tenders set EMD as a percentage of the estimated contract value, commonly somewhere between 1 and 5 percent, though some tenders use a fixed amount written in the NIT. This calculator multiplies the estimated value you enter by the percentage you pick. Always confirm the exact figure in the tender, because the buyer decides the rate and the NIT is binding.
Many buyers accept EMD through online payment, a bank guarantee, a fixed deposit receipt or a demand draft, depending on the portal. On GeM, bidders are asked for EMD on certain bids, and sellers registered as MSME or startups are often exempt. The exemption usually needs a valid registration certificate uploaded with the bid, so keep that certificate current.
EMD is different from the performance bank guarantee (PBG). EMD is taken at bid stage and returned to unsuccessful bidders. PBG is taken from the winner after the award and held until the contract is complete. Plan cash flow for both. Blocking EMD across several live tenders at once can tie up working capital, so it helps to total it before you decide how many tenders to chase.
Use the calculator early when you shortlist. It is a quick way to see whether the EMD fits your cash position before you invest time in the full document. BidShakti reads the stated EMD from every tender you open, so you do not have to hunt through the PDF.
